Case Study: Sarah Garg, Civil Celebrant

Sarah Garg is a family celebrant, working with couples to create personal wedding ceremonies and with families to mark the life of someone they’ve lost.

When her previous accountant retired, Sarah found herself needing to find someone new.

Tell us a little about you and your business

As a family celebrant marking life’s milestones, I work with couples arranging their wedding and families wishing to say a final farewell to a loved one, alongside their chosen funeral director.

With weddings, I’ll also work closely with other suppliers, including the photographer, making sure they’re aware of any moments of surprise so they can be in the right place at the right time.

When you were looking for an accountant, what were you looking for?

I like to think I’m pretty organised, so I was looking for an accessible accountant I could email my old-school spreadsheets to and ask questions along the way.

My previous accountant had retired, so I was reluctantly thrown into finding a replacement. My main concerns were having to explain my business all over again and wondering whether what I was doing was right.

Why did you choose Allison and AFor Accounting?

During my search for a replacement, I came across a Facebook post from someone asking for accountant recommendations. AFor and Allison’s name appeared multiple times from different people, so on that basis I emailed Allison that evening and got an immediate reply.

I liked Allison’s friendly approach and immediately felt like I’d known her for years. I appreciated the clear and simple language she used, so I knew she was someone I could feel comfortable and confident working with.

I actually enjoy year end approaching now! Allison and her team are super efficient, friendly and approachable.

Can you share an example of something Allison has helped you understand, improve or resolve?

As I’m a sole trader, Allison has clearly explained and answered all my questions around maintaining this status.

As we’re moving further forward digitally, Allison has also been great at discussing the different options with me, so I know I’m on the right track.

Much less stressed, I’d say.

Within a couple of days of submitting my paperwork, I already know my tax position, which is super efficient.What would you say to someone who feels nervous, embarrassed or overwhelmed about speaking to an accountant?

It can be all of those things, I think it’s really important to look around and only go with someone you get a good feeling from, follow your gut.

What would you say to someone who feels nervous, embarrassed or overwhelmed about speaking to an accountant?

I’d say don’t feel embarrassed. I’m not an accountant, so I happily pay for AFor’s professional services. We can’t all know everything about everything!
