Where AFor began
The name AFor has a unique origin a story that dates back to late 2013. At the time, I was working freelance within a variety of accounts departs but one particular client - a medical services company under a director who, although generally a nice person, could be quite difficult. On one particularly frustrating day, the director’s behavior upset and angered me —feelings that ultimately gave me the push I needed to make a change.
That evening, I sat down with a piece of paper and began listing reasons for and against starting my own accountancy business. On one side, I wrote
"A: For reasons to do it," and on the other side, "B: For reasons not to." The "A" list, soon became full with compelling reasons to pursue the idea, and that was decision made.
I sought advice from a friend in marketing about the company name. Not wanting to use my surname, as many accountancy firms do, I showed her the list. My friend immediately circled "AFor" at the top of the page and thought it was the perfect. And so, on the 13th of February 2014, AFor was officially born:

Yorkshire Accountancy Award Finalists!
Allison and the AFor team were delighted to attend the Yorkshire Accountancy Awards. We didn’t win, but we looked great and had a fabulous evening. To be recognised and shortlisted was amazing. We are very proud!
Meet our team of friendly professionals:

Allison, Director
When I’m not working for my clients in the office, I can usually be found taking short breaks abroad or away in my caravan. I also discovered a love of clay pigeon shooting. I love to socialise and spend time with friends. I pride myself in my ability to speak to clients in plain English, with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, it makes me an effective financial friend. I thrive on working under pressure (which is a good job). Being the head of the “AFor Family” fills me with immense pride for my own achievement and helping the team and clients to achieve too.

Ernie - Wellbeing Officer/ Therapy Dog and Company Mascot
I am the most important member of this team, I bring calm and happiness to a busy office, you could say I’m the resident therapist. I have dapper dress sense, and an uncanny ability to know who needs cuddles, either that or the person who shares their lunch or a treat – the office just wouldn’t be the same without me.
WOOF! WOOF!

Haleemah, Finance Manager
Writing a funny profile was difficult for me, I am serious (I can’t help it) I’m chilled and relaxed all the time, but in our crazy workplace this is a good thing. I run the office and staffing on a day-to-day basis along with my bookkeeping and accounting duties. Putting into practice what I have wanted to do since leaving school I can’t imagine doing anything else. I’m very family orientated and love spending time with them, I must do as my sister Ameenah now works with me. We both look forward to mum's cooking, as do the rest of the AFor team.

Ameenah - Accounts Associate
I’m the youngest in the office and one of the many roles is that of social media, marketing and promotions… skills I am able to teach the oldies! Juggling the phones and staffing rotas for one of our largest clients brings all my skills to the fore. When I’m not working, I can usually be found walking, I must get my 10,000 steps in every day even if this means walking the three miles to or from work. My colleagues say I’m quiet, but I can come up with some cracking one liners!

Mandy, Accounts Associate
I would say I’m the loudest of the team but loud and proud just about sums me up. I have a few piercings and tattoos, which I love, and again these make me, me. I work with various accounting systems as well as working in house for one of our clients. I love the variation my position allows me. I have a hectic home life having four children, a dog, and a fish! As a family, we have many hobbies which range from outdoor adventures to ice skating, smiles and memories to cherish.

Ruth, Accounts Associate
I am known as the quirky one in the office, but my colleagues are used to me now. I am also known for my ‘long stories short tales’…which are never short. I work well on my own and enjoy been given a challenge and nothing suits me more than a huge pile of receipts to reconcile. Outside work you will find me with my cats, no I’m not a crazy cat lady as such but I breed Bengal cats, they take up a lot of my time. Any other spare time I get I spend trying to tame my wild hair!

Kelly, Administrative Support Officer
My main role in the company is organising the work diary, so if you need to come and see us, just pick up the phone and give me a call! I feel I put my organisational and communicative skills to work here I provide solid and essential back up for my colleagues, I literally get done what needs doing. When I'm not at work, you'll find me behind my sewing machine, up-cycling furniture or having a go at any DIY ... I'm great with my hammer drill.

Alan, Accounts Associate
I work full time for one of our clients and I am based solely within their premises. I oversee the smooth running of the accounts department and every function within it. I am lucky enough that the client is in the exciting world of motor sport and as a complete car geek, this suits me down to the ground.

Dave, Chartered Accountant FCA, ICAEW
I am a rugby referee, but don’t hold that against me. With 22 years - and counting - of being a Chartered Accountant. I can offer insights into wide-ranging areas of financial accounting, including Statutory Accounts, Management Information, Budgeting and Forecasting. Basically, all the boring stuff, I am good at!
